Applied Jewelry Arts Graduate Jeweler

JMA3200 | Applied Jewelry Arts Diploma Program
GIA’s acclaimed instructors will teach the basic principles of design, perspective, and composition. Concentrate on metals, textures, trends, and price points. Become proficient in several types of casting, including horizontal centrifugal, tabletop vacuum, and chamber vacuum.
Learn how to cast stones in place, and spend time troubleshooting common casting challenges. Create molds of various types of jewelry from basic free-form shapes to complex traditional and contemporary jewelry. Use leading-edge CAD/CAM technology to design jewelry onscreen, reducing cost and increasing efficiency.

  • Understand jewelry design theory and acquire a working knowledge of jewelry artistry
  • Learn to illustrate shape, form, and texture of metal
  • Learn leading-edge 3-D technology to design jewelry using CAD (computer aided design) software
  • Create a wide variety of designs in wax
  • Use your own designs to make complete models for casting and mold making
  • Explore the art of vulcanized rubber and R.T.V. (room temperature vulcanizing) mold making and cutting techniques
  • Learn the art of cutting a mold

JMA3300 | Graduate Jeweler Diploma Program
In a trade shop environment, work with gemstones and precious metals and take a project from concept to completion. Complete a series of projects, and build skills in a progressive and cumulative manner. Through multimedia presentations, lectures, text, integrated videos, and live demonstrations, develop the skills of a trained bench jeweler. Train at your own workbench, equipped with a torch, power tools, and essential toolkit. Become comfortable and confident performing common manufacturing, repair, and stone setting requests.

  • Work with metals including how to melt, pour, roll, form, and solder
  • Learn how to file, pierce, and polish metal
  • Learn to perform the most common repair requests, including sizing rings, repairing chains, replacing earring posts, and resetting stones
  • Use laser welding technology to manufacture or repair jewelry – and reduce your production time
  • Learn the basics of working with gemstones
  • Learn how to set stones by working with a variety of mounting styles, settings, and fancy shape stones
