Debbie Ortiz, Subscriptions Manager

Debbie Ortiz celebrated her tenth anniversary with GIA on February 24, 2007.

She began her career with GIA as the Accounts Receivable Supervisor for the Laboratory, Gems & Gemology, and the Education divisions. In 1999, Gems & Gemology was looking for a liaison between the editorial staff and the public, Debbie anxiously volunteered and became the Circulation Coordinator. “I love working with such a quality product as Gems & Gemology and educating the public about its valuable contents,” she says.

Because of her personable nature and strong accounting skills, Debbie was asked to be the accounting coordinator for the annual Tucson gem and mineral show. On occasion, you will also find her presenting Gems & Gemology in classrooms at GIA headquarters in Carlsbad, California.

Debbie has recently earned her Graduate Gemologist diploma as well as her Accredited Jewelry Professional diploma through GIA’s Distance Education program. She also enjoys giving tours at the Institute and sharing her gemological knowledge with guests, who find the world of gemstones to be a fascinating subject.

Debbie was born and raised in San Diego, California. “On my time off, I love being able to visit the beach, the mountains, and the desert—sometimes you can do this all in one day. We have such a wide variety of landscapes in southern California. There is a lot to see, learn, and appreciate.”

Her favorite activities include camping, hiking, kayaking, bicycling, yoga, listening to live music, and spending time with her beloved family and friends.
