Five Members Added to G&G Editorial Review Board


Gems & Gemology is proud to announce five recent additions to its Editorial Review Board: Edward Boehm, James Butler, Jaroslav Hyrsl, Lore Kiefert, and Mark Newton. These individuals bring considerable intellect to the task of evaluating manuscripts submitted to G&G for accuracy, research methodology, and appropriateness for the journal’s readership.

Edward W. Boehm is president of JOEB Enterprises & Laboratory Services in Solana Beach, California. As a gem dealer, gemological consultant, and frequent contributor to the journal, Mr. Boehm is considered a leading expert on colored stones and their sources.

Dr. James Butler is head of the Gas/Surface Dynamics Section of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. With more than 190 papers on experimental chemical physics to his credit, Dr. Butler specializes in the study of diamond synthesis.

Dr. Jaroslav Hyrsl is an independent mineralogist and gemologist in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. Hyrsl specializes in the study of inclusions and rare gemstones and minerals. He is co-author of Magic World: Inclusions in Quartz (2003) and Minerals and Their Localities (2004), as well as many articles.

Dr. Lore Kiefert is laboratory director of the AGTA Gemological Testing Center in New York. She began her gemological career with the SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute, and has written numerous papers and lectured internationally. Dr. Kiefert is an authority on colored stone identification and origin determination.

Dr. Mark Newton is professor of physics at the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom. Dr. Newton’s research interests include the electronic properties and lattice structures of diamond defects, as well as the diffusion of impurities and activation of dopants in diamond.
